If there is no God, are human rights alienable or inalienable?
Q. Thomas Jefferson wrote that the truth is "self-evident" that we are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights. However, atheists claim that this truth is not self-evident, and that there is no evidence at all for God. If that is the case, can we still assert that the rights to life and liberty are inalienable, or does that make human rights alienable, i.e., dependent on the opinions of men?

A. For starters, I have no problem with evolutionary theory nor moral behaviorist theory. I believe they can be fitted in quite compatibly with Catholic teachings and Christian revelation. Although atheist evolutionary theory can develop a reasonable defense of morality, why is is and why it has come to be, (most of these views do not and cannot say a God did not intend morality to be so) it seems, to me at least, a very week defense indeed, if God is left out of the picture. If Atheists are correct and our morality arises merely out of a need for society, etc. then the fact that I have not killed anyone today is just as basic a thing as me being hungry today. Both are drives, both are equally useful and both would seemingly (if atheists… [cont.]
