In grammar, the comparative is the form of an adjective or adverb which denotes the degree or grade by which a person, thing, or other entity has a property or quality greater or less in extent than that of another, and is used in this context with a subordinating conjunction, such as than, as...as, etc.

Structure

The structure of a comparative in English consists normally of the positive form of the adjective or adverb, plus the suffix -er, or (in the case of polysyllabic words borrowed from foreign languages) the modifier "more" (or "less"/ "fewer") before the adjective or adverb. The form is usually completed by "than" and the noun which is being compared, e.g. "he is taller than his father is", or "the village is less picturesque than the town nearby". "Than" is used as a subordinating conjunction to introduce the second element of a comparative sentence while the first element expresses the difference ("our new house is larger than the old one"). There is less water in Saudi Arabia than there is in the United States; but however, there are fewer people in Canada than there are in California.

Two-clause sentences

For sentences with the two clauses other two-part comparative subordinating conjunctions may be used:

  1. as...as ("The house was as large as two put together.")
  2. not so / not as ...as ("The coat of paint is not as [not so] fresh as it used to be.")
  3. the same ... as ("The market square is just the same as I remember it to be.")
  4. less / more ... than ("It cost me more than I had hoped.")

What college courses would I need to take for a career in comparative psychology?
Q. What college courses will earn me a career in comparative psychology? What specific jobs could I hold, say, not in a large city? Thanks in advance!

A. You need to get a doctorate in psychology for this. And then, this is a rarely needed specialty and the only places with enough need for a person doing this would be in very large cities.

How to structure comparative essay on Romeo and Juliet?
Q. I have to do an essay comparing Juliet's soliloquies 'Gallop Apace' (her waiting for Romeo), and 'Farewell!' (before she takes the potion). I've got all the comparative points under wraps but how can I stop it from being repetitive, like: The tone is ... in the 1st one but like ... in the 2nd one. And so on. How would I write an introduction and conclusion also?

A. Write a successful play essay. Whether it's for exam or coursework, essays based on plays can pose special difficulties. Poetry essays can be difficult because the poems are often tough to interpret; novels can be difficult because they are l-o-n-g; but plays are difficult because they are performed as well as heard: they are written for the stage, not the page. What type return should be expected from a managed mutual fund portfolio relative to a comparative index?
Q. Not even sure the question makes sense and have a limited knowledge of how investments work. My quarterly statement from an account with an investment advisor shows my rate of return in a diversified mutual fund portfolio for a 5 year period and it's always lower than a comparative index. 5 points lower for the current year and less than one for the 5 year period. Net of 12.94 for the 5 years is good but should I be getting better from the advisor? Question may be too vague to answer but wanted thoughts from those more knowledgable on investing. Thank you.

A. OK, the general principle is that you will underperform the index by the amount of fees you are paying. But because fund returns go up and down and some funds are lucky and some unlucky, that is only a general principle. This is why index funds are great. They are low-cost and tax efficient and underperform the market by their expense ratio (internal management fees). Over time, 80% of managed funds underperform the companion index fund. If you didn't pay loads or a higher expense ratio or 12b-1 fees, that number would be much different. Here's a shocking example. I was comparing returns for a VUL - which is a high expense insurance police and also an investment (has mutual funds in it). I compared the return on the S & P 500 fund in… [cont.]
