Western philosophy is the philosophical thought and work of the Western or Occidental world, as distinct from Eastern or Oriental philosophies and the varieties of indigenous philosophies. Historically, the term was recently invented to refer to the philosophical thinking of Western civilization, beginning with Greek philosophy in ancient Greece, and eventually covering a large area of the globe, including North America and Australia. There is some debate of whether to include areas such as Northern Africa, some parts of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and so on. The word philosophy itself originated in ancient Greece: philosophia (φιλοσοφία), literally, "the love of wisdom" (φιλεῖν - philein "to love" and σοφία - sophia "wisdom", in the sense of knowledge). In contemporary terms, Western philosophy refers to the two main traditions of contemporary philosophy, analytic philosophy and continental philosophy. From Wikipedia under the

Philosophy implies further pensive and extensive investigation into truths, morals, wisdom etc. Islam doesn't have that, as God gives us a specific set of moral guidelines, truths, and wisdom within the Quran. As he says, it is the beacon of light. Their is though Islamic theology on interpretation of the Quran. Bertrand Russell's "History of Western Philosophy" is one of two very BIASED "histories" of Philosophy that I advise people to stay away from; the other is "Modern Philosophy" by Roger Scruton. I read Russell's "history" of Philosophy early on in my Philosophical quest, and it biased me against some of the smartest Philosophers - like Bergson, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer. I have listed below three fair histories of Philosophy that I recommend instead of reading Russell. 1) "The Story of Philosophy" by Will Durant - get both sets of the audio CDs and listen to them over and over. 2) "Socrates to Sartre: The Philosophical Quest" by LZ Lavine 3) "A History of Philosophy" by Frederick Copelston Answered by Zappa Fan - Thu Jan 29 12:08:47 2009 What lasting contributions did ancient greece make to Western Civ in the domain of art, politic and philosophy?
